DETECT IT

MAKE SURE YOU'RE SAFE:
  • You can talk to your doctor or a counselor about taking an HIV antibody test. Call the CDC National AIDS Hotline at 1-800-342-AIDS for information about HIV antibody testing and referrals to places in your area that you can get confidential or ano- nymous HIV testing.
  • The idea of being tested for HIV may be scary. But, if you are infected, the sooner you find out and start getting medical care, the better off you will be.
  • Talk about types of sex that don't risk HIV infection. If you decide to have sexual intercourse(vag- inal, anal, or oral), use condoms. Latex condo- ms can protect you from HIV infection if they are used the right way every time you have sex Ask your doctor, counselor, or call the CDC National AIDS Hotline at 1-800-342-AIDS for more information about safer sex.
  • Should I Take the HIV Test? Recent gains in HIV medical care and trea- tment have increased the benefit of learning whether you have HIV infection even before symptoms of illness appear. Also, if you are planning a pregnancy, you and your partner may want to know if either of you are infected before conceiving.
