SOCIAL EVIL
SOCIAL EVIL
GIVE IT A THOUGHT:
- There is no vaccine to prevent HIV infection
and no cure for AIDS. There are treatments
that can keep infected people healthy
longer and prevent diseases that people
with AIDS often get. Research is on-
going. In the past five years, one study
indicated that a few people with HIV
infection took longer than six months to
test "positive." This is an extremely rare
possibility.
- Conservative UNAIDS estimates are that 90%
of all HIV-infected people worldwide do not
know they have the virus..An estimated
800,000 to 1.2 million people in the United
States are infected with the Human Immu-
nodeficiency Virus (HIV)
- If you or anybody else is sick, stay away from
the person with AIDS until you're well. A
person with AIDS often can't fight off colds,
flu, or other common illnesses. If you are
sick and nobody else can do what needs
to be done for the person with AIDS,
wear a well-fitting, surgical-type mask that
covers your mouth and nose and wash
your hands before coming near the pe-
rson with AIDS.
- Treatment AND Taking the drug AZT during
pregnancy can REDUCE CHANCES of
infecting the baby by two-thirds, but will not
prevent all babies from becoming infected
with HIV.
- Issues such as gender imbalance and the
inability of women to negotiate when, how
and with whom they have sex is a social
policy issue. The question is how to ad-
dress directly the societal forces which
determine, more than anything else, vulne-
rability to HIV/AIDS.
- Ask your doctor, counselor, or call the CDC
National AIDS Hotline at 1-800-342-AIDS
for more information about safer sex.
